Too small? Colour it!
It's a strategy
Color plays a significant role in creating the illusion of space in a bathroom. To make a bathroom look bigger, consider the following color strategies:
Lighter Shades: Opt for light and neutral colors such as soft whites, pastels, light grays, or pale blues. Lighter hues reflect more light, making the space feel more expansive and airy.
Monochromatic Scheme: Use a single color or variations of the same color throughout the bathroom. This creates a seamless, uninterrupted look that can make the room appear larger by avoiding visual breaks.
Contrasting Accents: While keeping the main color scheme light, consider adding contrast through accent features like towels, rugs, or accessories in a slightly darker or bolder shade. This can add depth without overwhelming the space.
Reflective Surfaces: Incorporate reflective surfaces such as mirrors, glass tiles, or glossy finishes on cabinets or countertops. These surfaces bounce light around the room, creating a sense of openness.
Vertical Stripes or Patterns: Use vertical stripes or patterns on wallpaper or tiles to draw the eye upward, giving the impression of higher ceilings and therefore more space.
Limit Dark Colors: Minimize the use of dark colors, especially on walls or large surfaces, as they tend to absorb light and make the space feel more enclosed.
Ceiling Color: Consider painting the ceiling in a lighter shade than the walls to give the illusion of height, making the room feel taller and more spacious.
Remember, lighting also significantly impacts how colors are perceived. Ensure adequate lighting, preferably natural if possible, to complement the chosen color scheme and further enhance the sense of spaciousness in the bathroom.
Here are some tricks to choose the right colours for your bathroom if you want to be on the safe side
Naturally neutral colours
Choose colours that occur naturally, and of these, go for soft, neutral ones. Avoid ostentatious, garish shades, as they are more difficult to match and require a strong sense of style.
My personal tip for you is to start with the lightest colour, the one you use the most of. Then you can go one shade darker and use much less of it. You shouldn’t need more than four colours in your bathroom, the darkest one, which is really much darker than the other three, should be used only as decoration in a few places.
This way you get a nice simple and elegant harmony, a bathroom that is always a pleasure to enter.
Use your favourite colour
Whatever your favourite colour, feel free to use it in your bathroom!
The key is to remember that less is more, so choose two or three neutrals that work well with each other and with your favourite colour. Remember that the colour of the sanitaryware counts as one. If you want an exciting, lush bathroom with a full colour palette but don’t know what to do, it’s worth consulting a professional.
Think about it! A few well-chosen accessories such as rugs, towels and soap dishes are a quick and inexpensive way to freshen up the look of your bathroom.
